Sherwood Trust awards $1 Million in Grants to Local Organizations

Awards support nonprofit services, housing, immigration and youth programs

Sherwood Trust awards $1,057,000 in grants to 11 local organizations, CEO Brian Hunt announced. The awards include Sherwood Trust’s annual competitive Core grants and Invitational grants awarded outside annual competitive grant programs.
 

“We are grateful to build on the example set by our founders to invest in local nonprofits and the critical work they do every day to support local people,” said Hunt. “These grants support our vision that everyone in the Walla Walla Valley has a sense of belonging and can contribute to thriving communities.”

With this year’s grants, the Trust has invested more than $37 million to strengthen nonprofits and improve communities in Walla Walla and Columbia counties in Washington and Milton-Freewater, Oregon.

“Local nonprofits provide critical services,” said Sherwood Trust Board President Paul Schneidmiller. “We are proud to support their dedication and commitment to serving and supporting everyone who lives here.”


2023 Core grants were awarded to the following:

•    $200,000 to Tri-City Partners Habitat for Humanity to support the development and construction of affordable homes in Walla Walla.
•    $200,000 to YWCA Walla Walla to support development of a licensed childcare center in Dayton.
•    $175,000 to Walla Walla Immigrant Rights Coalition to support staffing over two years.
•    $50,000 to Blue Mountain Land Trust to support outdoor youth recreation.
•    $45,000 to Waitsburg Town Hall to support the installation of ADA bathrooms.
•    $45,000 to All Saints Thrift Store of Dayton to support the purchase of a vehicle.
•    $45,000 to Central Washington Justice for our Neighbors to support outreach and pro-bono legal aid for immigrants.
•    $42,000 to Plus Delta After School Studios in Dayton to support youth after school activities.
•    $30,000 to Frazier Farmstead in Milton-Freewater for the construction of a pioneer schoolhouse.

In addition to the competitive Core grant awards, Sherwood Trust’s disbursed $225,000 through its non-competitive Invitational grant program:
•    $125,000 as the second installment of a three-year commitment to support Commitment to Community, a grassroots community engagement program at Blue Mountain Action Council that serves specific Walla Walla neighborhoods.
•    $100,000 as the second installment of a three-year commitment to Community Council, a regional nonprofit that engages people through dialogue, inquiry and advocacy to build a vibrant region.

Sherwood Trust expects to disburse $1.5M in grants this year. Impact grant program this fall will provide up to $15,000 to eligible organizations that have not received Sherwood Trust funding in the last five years. Learn more about Sherwood Trust grant programs here.
