Since our founding in 1991, we have invested over $41 million to strengthen nonprofit organizations and develop communities across our region.

Our History

For more than a century, the Sherwood family has been closely tied to the growth and character of the Walla Walla Valley. Donald and Virginia Sherwood believed deeply in education, opportunity, and community, and they devoted their lives to strengthening the region they called home. Their story reflects both personal determination and an enduring commitment to investing in others.

 

Their influence touched nearly every corner of Walla Walla. Donald’s business leadership helped shape regional industries, downtown development, and major civic projects—including the creation of the Alder Street library. Together, he and Virginia became two of Whitman College’s most significant supporters, helping secure its financial stability and ensuring the College could thrive for future generations. Their philanthropy was consistent, personal, and grounded in a belief that communities

In 1991, the Sherwoods created Sherwood Trust to carry this work forward. Today, the Trust continues to invest in the people, organizations, and partnerships that make the Walla Walla Valley vibrant and resilient. Guided by the principle “We Build Community Together,” Sherwood Trust honors the Sherwoods’ legacy by supporting a stronger, more connected future for everyone who calls this region home.
